The Clep Exam - What is it and How Do I Prepare

By Wayne Hemrick

Clep is an acronym for College Level Examination Program. If you are an individual who is pursuing a college degree, this program will likely be of interest to you. It allows you to save both time and money on your college education by sitting for a two hour clep exam, and if you achieve a certain score your college or university will award you college credit for having taken the test. Students can save money, because typically the clep exam costs much less than the credits would cost if the class was taken. It also will save you time, because you can receive credit for classes that normally take anywhere from one quarter to up to a year of time. These are a couple of the major reasons why the clep exam is so popular, and if your college offers credit for the clep testing you wish to take, the next question is how to prepare successfully for clep testing.

You will want to avail your self of several clep study guide aids, including online clep study. Many of the clep prep aids will provide you with study tips, so you can study wisely for the particular clep exam you wish to take.

Clep study can include time spent working on sample questions, sample tests that are timed, and focused reading in the test subject area. Many students find that a combination of all three of these clep study methods provides them with the information coverage that will be required in order to pass the exam successfully.

Most of the exams are in a multiple-choice question format, although some of the tests also require a written essay. The tests are timed, so this is another consideration as you prepare. A good clep study guide will often give advice for the best strategies for success on your exam.

Another bit of preparation can actually occur on test day itself. The exams are set up with a brief tutorial at the beginning, so you can get used to the test format before you actually begin taking the exam. The tutorial is not timed.

The College Board, who prepares these exams, offers individual descriptions of each of the thirty four clep tests that they offer. They also offer a listing of the knowledge and skills that the exam requires, as well as study resources that you will want to look at and use in clep prep for your exam. Online clep study aids are also available.
