Education in India - New IITs

By Sanjeev Pandey

When prominent alumni of the existing seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were drawing up a blueprint to set up a new IIT, the government itself had announced plans for new IITs in the coming years to bridge existing gaps in technical education. Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh in August this year unveiled a plan to set up eight IITs for a revolution in the field of present education system. The IIT mission would therefore be in line with that long-term objective of central government.

Higher education in India got a big boost with eight new IITs to be set up at a total cost of Rs.60.80 billion ($1.5 billion). New IITs had been approved in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Among them, six IITs have already started their academic sessions this year, while the other two - approved in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh - are expected to start operations from the 2009-10 academic years. To ensure that the IITs function properly, the government has sanctioned 30 faculty posts per year for each new IIT. It has also specifically approved the post of a Director in each of these IITs in the grade of Rs. 26,000 (fixed) and a post of Registrar in the grade of Rs.16,400 -22,400 for each new IIT. The Cabinet has also decided to raise the grade of all existing seven IIT Directors from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 26,000 (fixed).

Three existing IITs - Guwahati, Madras and Delhi - have been made mentor institutions for the education institutes at Patna, Medak and Rajasthan respectively. Technical faculty from the Guwahati and Madras IITs are deployed to teach at makeshift campuses at Patna and Medak. IIT Rajasthan doesn't even have a makeshift campus, and has started functioning from its mentor's campus at IIT Delhi.

With 6 new IITs functioning this year, overseas expansion of IITs is put on hold. The HRD ministry has said that Syria's vision of an IIT in its capital will have to wait for some time. There are mixed responses from experts on these new IITs. Prime Minister's initiative to establish eight new IITs has drawn flak from his scientific adviser CNR Rao, who said that the opening of so many IITs is going to be a disaster. Even prominent alumni of IITs are concerned about IIT brand value. They raise questions about operations of new IITs. The one problem which bothers all new IIT directors is that of finding quality teaching staff.

As per the government, the creation of new IITs will enable provision of high quality Indian education for more students. It would also address state and region specific technology related problems of states and UTs situated in the IITs' Zones. Prominent IIT Prof. Joshi said the new IITs have created opportunities. Recently in a meeting at Patna he said, a number of brilliant students who might have not made it due to limited number of seats will now be able to join in IITs. Putting aside initial problems and operational difficulties, these institutes are expected to address high quality manpower requirements of Indian industry.

Online Degree Programs Offer Students an Alternative to Traditional Education

By Beau Vignes

More students than ever before are enrolled in online college courses. According to the Sloan Consortium, an association devoted to the growth of quality online education, nearly 3.5 million students were taking at least one online college course during the fall term of 2006. That number has jumped ten percent from the previous year.

The first form of online education was introduced in the early 1990s and was used by companies to train new employees. As the Internet continued to evolve and people were able to own personal computers, universities and other institutions began to use this medium as a way to reach out to students on a higher educational basis. By the year 2000, more colleges and universities began focusing on online education as technology continued to progress. Completely online degree programs offered by distinguished universities became increasingly popular.

Over the years, the workforce has changed greatly. Today, many studies show that in order to land a higher paying position or earn a promotion, you must have a degree. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, for a firefighter to be promoted to a position higher than battalion chief a bachelor's degree is required in a field such as fire science or public administration.

Earning an online degree is easier for adults who are already considered to be in the "real world" and not looking for the typical college experience. There are no classes to commute to and students can work from any computer with an internet connection anytime that is convenient for them. Online courses are flexible and allow students to work at their own pace, which is suitable for those trying to fit an education around their busy life.

However, students should be cautious when choosing an online university. There are numerous "diploma mill" scams that many have become victim to. When choosing an online university, make sure to keep the following in mind:

  • Choose a university accredited by an accrediting agency that is approved by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). You can search for a school accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation at www.chea.org/search.

  • It takes time to earn a quality degree. Do not choose a university that claims you can obtain a degree within a few days or weeks.

  • Many "diploma mills" charge a flat rate or charge per degree. Legitimate universities collect tuition by credit or course, not per degree.

  • You have to do the course work to earn a degree. "Diploma mills" may grant degrees based solely on work or life experience without requiring exams or assignments. Accredited universities may give a few credits for experience related to the field of study, but not an entire degree.

Beau Vignes is an the Internet Marketing Manager at Columbia Southern University. Columbia Southern University (CSU), one of the nation's first online universities, currently serves more than 14,000 students nationwide and around the world. Associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral online degree programs in popular fields including fire science, business administration, occupational safety and health, environmental management, and more are available. CSU is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council, an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA.

Juggling Work and School Pays Off With Rewarding Careers

By Cynthia Atoji

Are you thinking about juggling work and school? Chances are you're not alone. With the rising cost of living, along with increasing financial pressures, about 85 percent of part-time college students are employed, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. And this trend will only continue, as shortages in the workplace increase, especially among healthcare workers.

But although combining a job with education-as well as family commitments-can be a tough balancing act, experts say that learning always pays off in the long run. Whether your goal is to be a medical or dental assistant, or pursue opportunities as a pharmacy technician or optical dispenser, with a little advance planning and wise time management, it's easy to advance your career.

Here are some tips for managing the challenge of attending your local career college while still earning an income-and how to make the most of your current work and school experience:

Choose a job with flexible hours: Whether you attend classes in the daytime or evening, there are plenty of employers who are willing to offer different shifts and schedule your working hours around your schooling. You might want to initially work a manageable amount of hours, and then, if you feel comfortable taking on more, ask your employer to add on additional days or work time.

Ask about financial aid: Money should never be an obstacle to your success. If you're unable to meet your educational costs, ask your college financial aid office if you qualify for funding. Often students have several options for tuition payment. Grants and low-interest government loans are available based on financial need.

Cut back on expenses: Look at your budget and trim costs wherever you can, whether they be personal care, commuting, clothing, phone bills, entertaining and dining, or other expenditures. Remember that you will enjoy higher earnings when you finally receive your certificate of completion, which more than pays for your current sacrifices. This will be sooner than you realize, since many career college programs take only eight to 10 months to complete.

Ask for help: Don't sweat the details-your career college can help you with the day-to-day issues that can seem overwhelming. If you need public transportation information, carpooling contacts, or child-care referrals, the school's student services office can provide advice. Students can even receive assistance with conflict resolution or other personal needs.

Learn from your current job experiences: No matter where you're currently working, take the time to observe the way the organization operates. This will be invaluable knowledge when it comes to looking for your next job. Use every job interview as an opportunity to practice your skills. Then, when you're nearing completion of your certificate, talk to your career college job placement assistance department for help finding a job in your chosen profession. They can help with career planning and advising, interviewing skills, and more.

Look for work related to your schooling: Any experience helps when entering a new industry. If you're interested in being a dental assistant, for example, perhaps you can get your foot in the door in an entry-level position before you even complete your course of study.

Make a schedule and stick to it: Set aside time to study, time to work-and time to relax. Be sure you're well-rested so you're able to concentrate on your homework assignments and lab work. Let your friends and families know that you need uninterrupted study time.

Health Care Boom Opens Up Huge Demand For Support Staff

By Cynthia Atoji

Not all of us have what it takes to become a physician or surgeon. These high-paying-and demanding-professions require huge investments of time and money, not to speak of the fierce competition to get into medical school. But, if you've always wanted to work in a hospital or doctor's office, becoming a healthcare support staffer might be just the shot in the arm your career needs. With training from a top-notch career college, in about 8 to 10 months, you can be a valued team member in a lab, pharmacy, physician's office or dental practice.

According to the Department of Labor, health care is the second fastest-growing sector of the U.S. economy, employing over 12 million workers. California, in particular, has a shortage of health care professionals, with vacancies across the state, raising salaries and increasing employment opportunities for high school graduates, career changers and other job seekers.

Although the media has focused on the critical need for registered nurses (RNs), well-trained and competent clinical support staff, such as Medical Assistants and Surgical Technologists, as well administrative support staff, including Health Claims Examiner/Medical Billers, are also an essential component in providing quality health care services.

In the past, on-the-job training might have been sufficient to become a member of a medical/dental office or lab support staff. But today, the bar has been raised: workers need to hit the ground running, with a complete understanding of the advances in medical technology, as well as the knowledge and practical skills necessary to be competent in different environments, whether private, public, governmental or university-based. As a Medical Assistant, for example, you might expect to help out with basic insurance billing, medical records and other office skills, but you might also check vital signs or help set up for physical exams. Medical Assistants have found work in hospitals, clinics, HMOs, and home health organizations.

Other hands-on, patient-oriented careers that have been increasing along with a growing and aging population are Massage Therapist, Pharmacy Technician, and Dental Assistant. If you find you enjoy these roles, it's possible to go on and receive further education to become a registered nurse or physician assistant.

One exciting health care option is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, an ultrasound professional who performs clinical assessments and diagnostic examinations. Imagine the gratification of being able to track a baby's growth or help diagnose a tumor or organ disease. You can use your love of anatomy and physiology without needing years of intense schooling, while earning a satisfying living.

Optical Dispensing is another field with limitless potential. With a majority of the population requiring eyewear, an optical dispensing specialist who passes the National Optician Exam and Contact Lens Registry Exam can be qualified to work as a ophthalmic lab technician, contact lens fitter, eye doctor's assistant, manufacturer's representative or optical office manager. You can even open your own store someday --an exciting and challenging opportunity to realize your financial and personal independence.

No matter what health care support staff position is right for you, look for a fully accredited college with qualified faculty, modern facilities, and placement assistance. An admissions representative can help you figure out where your aptitude and talents lie. And when the time comes, you can receive help with interviewing skills, resume preparation, and job leads.

"I felt like I was in a dead end in my career, and now a whole new world has opened up for me," said one recent healthcare graduate.

The Ugly Side of College Life

By Bob Roth

There is an ugly side of college life that is not always clear to students, a side that all parents should discuss with children who are in college or about to enter college.

Unfortunately, there is an amazing number of deceptive and harmful people out there who will try to take advantage of young and inexperienced students. Most often, this involves people trying to take their money, their personal information, their innocence and their feelings of security. Let me remind you of some.

Scams - Most scams try to do one of two things: 1) Take your money, or 2) Take your identity and personal information, so they can take your money. Since most scams are over the internet, students must always be alert to the possibility that the person on the other end is trying to steal from them. Savvy students keep their personal and financial information to themselves. They recognize that free offers are often just a way to obtain private and confidential information.

Drugs - Every college student has access to drugs. Some students sell drugs for the money and hope that they can hook a buyer who will then purchase more drugs. They don't care if other students become addicted and ruin their lives.

Gambling - There is an element on every campus that regularly plays poker for money and bets on college and professional sporting events. For many, gambling is an addiction. In any event, students can quickly get in over their heads.

Alcohol Abuse - Too many college students engage in underage drinking, irresponsible drinking games, binge drinking and drunk driving. These are self-destructive, life threatening behaviors that must be avoided.

Smoking & Smokeless Tobacco - Tobacco companies are known to aggressively market tobacco products to college students. Free products and T-shirts are meant to lure new users. However, dying early from the effects of tobacco products is not cool.

Credit Cards Debt - Credit card companies are eager to sign up college students. They offer easy credit because they know that many students graduate with credit card balances in excess of $3,000. That is their goal.

Hazing - This experience still exists at some colleges and sometimes gets out of hand. Before you join a sorority or fraternity, investigate their history, policies and leaders. Don't do anything that is dangerous, immoral, illegal or just doesn't feel right.

Campus Theft - Theft is common on most college campuses. Be sure to protect cash, credit cards, computers, cameras, cell phones, electronic equipment, games, jewelry and other valuables. Report all thefts to campus security.

Campus Safety - At night, when walking around campus or in town, travel in groups of three or more. Don't split up. Larger groups usually offer greater security. Ask for a campus escort if you are concerned.

Muggings & Assault - With so many students and non-students allowed on open campuses, muggings and assaults will take place. Be alert and travel in groups. Report suspicious people and activities to campus security. Consider taking a Police sponsored, self-defense and violence prevention course.

Stalkers - Although rare, stalking does take place on college campuses. Report the problem to campus security and/or the local police. Keep a detailed log of any encounters or incidents that place. If possible, supply security with a photo of the stalker. Ask all of your friends, professors, advisors and campus security to keep an eye out for you. Always try to travel with a group of friends or ask for an escort. Get counseling, if needed.

Rape & Date Rape - Anticipate and avoid people and situations that may lead to trouble. Prevention is your best ally. Alcohol is a girl's greatest enemy. Most date rapes take place when the girl has had too much to drink.

Unprotected Sex & STD's - Sexually transmitted diseases exist on every campus. When students are sexually active, abstinence, protection and medical treatment are needed to deal with these issues. Know the facts and find out where to get help.

Anticipation and prevention are often the best ways to minimize these problems. Don't wait! Seek help immediately from counselors, advisors and campus or town police. When you quickly take action, you can usually prevent the problem from escalating. In many cases, the perpetrator will back off when others become involved. Don't try to handle everything yourself.

If necessary, work your way higher and higher in the campus hierarchy to get help. The Dean of Students, the Vice President of Student Affairs and The Office of the President are all there to help you. When you are not satisfied with the response of a campus official, don't be afraid to move up to the next level.

College Students Should Go After the Jobs That They Want

By Bob Roth

Most college students gradually become more clear about their direction and goals, as they move from one year of college to the next. Therefore, once you figure out what you want to do after college, you should go after the job that you want. Don't assume that employers will find you. They won't.

Preparation Is Critical - Employers with the jobs that you want are likely to interview many candidates for each job. Make the assumption that every employer has one job opening for every 8 to 15 students they interview, maybe many more. Therefore, you must devote your college years to the factors that will maximize your ability to compete. Success lies in the quantity and quality of your preparation. Only great preparation can result in great success.

Answer This Question - Why should the employer select you? Throughout college, your job is to accumulate the education, experience, accomplishments and qualities that will make this question easy for you to answer.

To find greater success, you can follow these five steps:

Do Some Research - During your freshman or sophomore year, Identify a few employers that offer the type of work that interests you. Find out what they will be looking for and what will impress them. To do this, you can use the internet and tap your network. Be sure to talk with Professors, Advisors, Career Services, Alumni, Recent Interviewees, Recent Hires, Competitors, Recruiters and the Employers themselves. Until you know exactly what the employers are looking for, you can't properly prepare. Learn about the qualifications and experience of the candidates who were hired last year. Then, set out to do more and better than those recent hires.

Decide How You Will Differentiate Yourself - Your good looks aren't enough. Exceptional Grades, Technical Skills, Accomplishments, Work Experience, Communication Skills, Leadership Skills, People Skills, Responsibilities Held, Problems Solved, Revenue Generated, etc. Few candidates are hired simply because they have good grades. The best employers want more than that. They prefer well rounded students who can get things done, communicate, lead and interact with a diverse group of people. They will want to hear about the specifics. Be prepared to tell stories and provide detailed examples.

Get Some Practical Experience - Remember what you learned from your employer research. Then, spend two to three years doing the things that these potential employers want. This includes gaining experience through part time and summer work and participating in the academic, campus and local community to build a list of impressive accomplishments. Take care to develop your best personal qualities, including your leadership, communication and people skills. Note: If you have few accomplishments during your college years, employers won't have any reason to believe that you will make a significant contribution to their organization. The best candidates find ways to demonstrate their skills, knowledge, energy and capabilities. They give employers more than one reason to hire them.

Obtain The Tools You Will Need - There are many tools that you will need for your job search. Don't wait to get started on them. You will need an outstanding resume built around your accomplishments, interviewing skills that demonstrate your communication skills and self-confidence, a broad network that can be used to gather information, a list of relevant employment web sites and employment agencies, impressive references, a list of well researched employers and a list of questions you will ask. Give careful thought to your clothing and accessories, your overall appearance and body language. Smart candidates don't leave anything to chance. They gather and prepare an outstanding array of tools, in a effort to gain an advantage.

Conduct A Thorough And Comprehensive Job Search - You may very well need to contact more than 200 employers before you receive a job offer. That's why you must spend so much time getting ready. It's also the reason that you must work so hard at finding a job. Good jobs don't fall into your lap. You earn them.

Take advantage of your previous research. At the beginning of your final year, begin to contact every employer on your list. Tap your network to obtain information and contact that can help with your search. Visit the appropriate employment web sites and contact some employment agencies. Do more research and keep going.

Make certain the your resume emphasizes you accomplishments, responsibilities and capabilities. Be prepared to explain how you made things better for others. Show employers not only what you did but, more importantly, the results of what you did and how those results benefited your group, college, employer, organization or community. Paint a picture that leaves little doubt that you are willing and able to take on the responsibility for getting things done.

As you begin to conduct your job search, everything must come together. Your research, your strategy for differentiation, your experience and accomplishments, the tools you have prepared and your effort and enthusiasm must all be focused on the same goal. Don't operate as though you will obtain a job offer from your campus interviews. Only a tiny percentage of students, across the country, will get job offers that way.

Clearly, the more effort you commit to preparation, the better your chances for job hunting success. The number of interview opportunities that you generate will greatly depend on the diligence you have demonstrated in previous years. Start early!

College Students Must Compete For the Best Jobs

By Bob Roth

If you are attending college to make a better future for yourself, there is a question that you must answer. Do you know how to compete for the best jobs? Well, let me give you a better idea of what is needed.

Since recruiters and employers only know what you give them, you must work very hard to give them strong and positive reasons to interview you, refer you on to the next step and eventually hire you. To compete effectively, you can't leave anything to chance.

A Powerful Resume - Oftentimes, your resume is the first thing a recruiter sees. It may be read and evaluated to determine if you will even be interviewed. Keep in mind that your resume is built first with your accomplishments, then with your words. If you haven't been active in academic, campus, community and work activities, you will have few examples of your capabilities and potential. Resumes are less about what you did and more about what you accomplished. Remember too that employers generally believe that your past accomplishments are the best predictors of future performance.

First Impressions - When it comes to your resume and interview, first impressions count. Since the best employers almost always have large numbers of candidates, they look for reasons to screen people out, not screen them in. Only the final few will be considered.

Let's start with the way you look. You must dress and look as though the job interview is of great importance to you. Be and look professional. If you don't care about the impression you make, you will kill your chances for success. Your clothing, hair, jewelry, shoes, tattoos, piercings, handshake, smile, speech and mannerisms all help to create that first impression. When the first impression is not good, the recruiter will have little reason to keep you in the mix.

Well Spoken - What words will come out of your mouth and how will you say them? Recruiters pay close attention to your vocabulary and speaking style. Your words reflect on your education and level of sophistication. When you use slang, mispronounce words or use a style that is too familiar and not businesslike, you will hurt your chances of success.

Significant Accomplishments - Since employers want to know how you can contribute to the success of their organization, they will want to learn about the capabilities that you have already demonstrated. Those capabilities carry more weight when they extend beyond the classroom. Every employer is looking for people who can get things done and have developed communication, leadership and people skills. Anytime you have success in one of these areas, make certain that your positive results are highlighted on your resume.

Stories and Examples - Your capabilities are more interesting and more powerful when you are able to provide impressive examples. Stories about your accomplishments add realism and excitement. Therefore, wise students spend time thinking about and polishing the stories they will tell, especially the problems they were able to overcome. Employers love students who are willing to fight for success.

Differentiation - Being able to differentiate yourself from other candidates is always important. However, it is especially important when every candidate has the same major, has taken the same courses and has achieved good grades. To give yourself the opportunity to stand out, smart students seek out job-related activities and employment. As students participate in campus, community and work activities, they can gain experience, improve their skills and develop a list of accomplishments and success stories.

Importantly, there is an opportunity to differentiate yourself in everything you do. Think more, better, faster, solve problems, help someone, benefit your employer or a customer, demonstrate creativity or generate revenue, etc.

Be Memorable - If after a day of interviewing the recruiter doesn't remember you, it is unlikely that you will make the referral list. Your resume and your interview must be impressive and memorable in a positive way. You must leave the interviewer with a reason to remember you.

When the interviewer returns to his/her company office, you should be in the forefront of their mind. Use your creativity to find ways to be memorable. Consider these possibilities: 1) Leave them with a vexing question, 2) Ask them to do something for you, 3) Give them something to read or take back with them, or 4) Send them a thank you note. Whatever you do, it should be businesslike, related to your field and memorable. Your accomplishments, if powerful enough, are the best way to accomplish this task.

References and Recommendations - While in college, students should make a special effort to connect with and build relationships with respected and influential people on campus, at work and in the community. Employers expect the best candidates to have previously impressed leaders and professionals in all three areas. Multiple references from a variety of sources are impressive, especially when they provide enthusiastic and specific examples of your accomplishments and capabilities.

All of this is a little like getting your drivers license. You probably thought about driving for a couple of years before you received your learners permit and eventually your license. You found out what was required. Then, you studied the drivers manual and perhaps you took a class. You practiced your parking, developed your driving skills and discussed strategies with your parents and friends. When you were ready, you took your written test and then your road test. If you did well enough, you received your license. You did this because driving was important to you.

If it is important to you to land a great job with a respected employer, you should get started early. The success factors described above must be incorporated into each yearly plan of action (You can't wait until your senior year.). Only students who pay close attention to these factors will be able to compete effectively. Even the best students (academically) can greatly increase their employment potential by addressing these key factors.

Are you ready to compete?

Various Ways to Attack the Task of Earning a College Degree

By Billings Farnsworth

There are more choices for you than ever when it comes to getting a college degree. You can go to a community college and then transfer over to a four year university or college, you can go away to a four year college or university, or you can study at home and earn your college diploma by going to college online. There are pros and cons to all of these college initiatives.

Attending a Two Year College and Then Transferring

This is a cheap way to attend college while still being able to stay at home. Students who attend community colleges can stay at home and even have a part time job when they are attending college. In addition to having the convenience of being at home, community colleges are very inexpensive. Especially when compared to even state colleges. This can save parents or students, who may be struggling, some money. It also gives a young person who is not quite sure what they want to do a chance to figure out their major and perhaps changing it, without it costing a small fortune.

The con of attending a two year college is that many of the classes will not transfer to the four year school. Some schools look down on those who attend a two year year college and will not accept transcripts, although this happens more at the post graduate level. However, you can go on to a four year college and post graduate school if you attend a two year college to start out.

Attending a Four Year College Right Away

Attending a four year college right away is a good choice for someone who knows what they want to do and is disciplined. It gives the student not only the freedom of being on their own for the first time, but also a chance to learn about life as well as school. Four year colleges are more prestigious than two year colleges so the chances of being accepted into a post graduate program are much better.

The cons of attending a four year college or university right off the bat is that many young people do not know what to do and cannot handle the freedom. Many get into trouble with alcohol, develop bad study habits and end up having problems the first year. An increasing number of young people are taking five years to go to a four year college - a problem that can be very expensive.

Attending an online college

An online college allows you to get an education from your home. You do not have to worry about traveling and can study at your own pace. They are generally inexpensive and are today's answer to the correspondence course.

The con of the online college is that many employers do not take them as seriously as they do a degree from a four year college. You should make sure your college is accredited before applying to an online college to earn a college degree.

What College Students Should Do in Their First Week

By Tom Tessin

Going to college can be both a very stressful and time consuming part of your life. Whether you're going to college for the first time in the near future or you've been going to college for a few years now, there are certain things that every college student should do during the first week. To make sure your first week of college goes very smoothly, consider some of these ideas listed below:

Signing up for classes - As a college student, you want to make sure you are choosing classes that are best for you. You don't want to take classes that are too challenging or too many classes. Make sure it is a schedule you can handle. If it is your first semester of college, you may only want to take three classes (being full time, 3*4.0 = 12.0 credits.) Taking the minimum amount of classes will help you get a feel for how much you can handle.

Going to class - You want to make sure that you go to every class for the first week of college. The professors usually give you a syllabus and go through what the course will be like. If you miss this information, you will already be behind class. If you don't like the class, and you haven't showed up until the following second week, you most likely won't get a full refund either. Make sure you get to class and you're prepared.

Go through the syllabus - You want to go through the syllabus with the teacher and when you get home. Make sure you get a good idea for what the class will be like. You want to make sure this is a class for you and you will be interested in it. Often in the syllabus, it tells you the rules, the schedule for the year and what the class will be like. Be sure you understand all of your professor's expectations.

Grade your professor - Make sure you get along with your professor. You don't want a professor that is extremely hard to get along with, doesn't teach well, and someone who is going to be hard to work with. For all the money you pay towards classes, get someone that you will like. You don't want to be miserable and dread going to class because of the professor. In college you're suppose to have fun, meet new friends and learn more than you knew when you first entered.

Get your textbooks - Professors often want to get right into things the first week or two. This is very hard to do if you don't have any books to read from or refer to. Make sure you get your college textbooks the very first week of school. The beginning of class is not the time to get behind.

Set up a schedule for yourself - Since college can be very stressful, you want to make sure that you set a schedule for yourself. If you have a job and you're working while going to school, have days for both. You don't want to overdue yourself so make a day for studying and a day for working.

Get all your school supplies - Often you need quite a few school supplies when in college. You'll most likely need things from pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, and many other little odds and ends. When going to class the first week of school, you will find out what you need.

There are many things college students should do when going to college. Be sure that you are prepared and you'll be off to a good start. The first week of college is the absolute most important part of school. Make a good impression and be prepared the first week and you'll be one step ahead. Consider these tips above and see how you're college semester goes more smoothly.

By Rohit Kumar Mehra

The history of inculcating formal technical education in India started in the 19th century although it got momentum in 20th century with the onset of Constitution of Technical Education Committee of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE). Want to Work For That Huge Payday? Get an MBA Now!

By Otto Kreistler

These days, everybody just wants it all! The fastest cars, the priciest clothes, houses on the highest hills, the highest pay-these are the marks of success that many people strive for today. Many would claim that more simple or spiritual rewards are always better, but the fact remains that these things are usually markers that you have indeed made it to the top of the mountain.

And what can usually get you there? There are few avenues more lucrative than the field of business when it comes to making a profit and hitting it big. But usually a good instinct and great business sense alone do not make you a leader in the field. What you need is the expertise, experience, and scientifically-based knowledge that will give you the know-how to be competitive in the shark pool. And what else other than an MBA degree can give you such an expertise?

But getting into a top business school for your MBA is no joke. It is a process that involves several steps and should not be taken lightly. So if you want your day in the spotlight to begin with earning your MBA degree, these are just a few of the things you'll be needing to put yourself in the driver's seat and start taking control of your life:

- The Application Form: This is the most basic requirement you'll be needing when applying for a postgraduate degree like an MBA. It contains a lot of the basic information that schools need to help them determine what kind of graduate student you will become once enrolled in their program. For optimum results, you should produce more than one copy of this, in case of errors. Be sure to be honest when it comes to all of the information you're writing down and be mindful of deadlines!

- Curriculum Vitae: Your application form may say a lot of things about you but it doesn't exactly say all the things the top business schools need to know. An updated curriculum vitae serves as proof of all the things that you wrote down on your application form. It is a record of your work history, skills and professional accomplishments.

- Application Essay: This piece not only gives your admissions panel a hint of how good your communication and writing skills are, but also allows them an in depth look at what your intentions are in applying for the graduate program and how you plan to go about the next two years. Emphasize strengths but be honest about weaknesses as well.

- Recommendation Letter: Just to prove that all of the information you included within your form and CV are accurate, recommendation letters stand as the testimony of your peers and superiors to your skills, potentials and achievements. So be sure to always be courteous and to keep your recommender's schedule in mind.

These are the most important but only a few of the total requirements you'll be needing for your entry into the MBA program. If you want to learn more about how to secure that slot that takes you to the top, just visit: http://mbadegrees.com/mba-application/

If You Want it All, Want it Bad - A Few Tips on Passing the GMAT

By Otto Kreistler

Rising within the ranks is usually something that doesn't come easy. When you're in that spotlight it is usually a requirement that you shine or else you may get passed over forever. And the challenges that you are likely to face while you're climbing to the top are some of the toughest you'll ever face in your life. And what else can help you zoom above the rest than the best training in business and management you can ever get in this world? This amazing jump-start to your life of success is what's called the MBA degree.

But even getting the MBA itself is an act fraught with challenges in itself. One of the first and biggest hurdles that you have to overcome would be the GMAT or Graduate Management Admission Test. This is an examination that measures your readiness for advanced or postgraduate study. Passing this would be a step further in the right direction as it usually means you have the right stuff to qualify for a pool where only a select few are chosen.

But how can you pass such a rigorous examination that measures your overall aptitude in several fields? Preparation is key, but only if you know what to prepare for and how. And with that in mind, here is a lowdown on what kind of animal you're about to be facing and what strategies would be wise if you wish to overcome it with flying colors:

- Verbal Reasoning: This is usually the first part of the exam and an important part of it as it judges how well you read and understand written material. It is not only important in determining the level of your communication skills but also to a certain extent, your creativity, especially when it comes to using the language. The first part of this would be sentence correction, where you will be asked to revise an underlined clause in a given sentence, with one of five choices.

The clearest, most concise choice is most often the right answer. The second part of this would be critical reasoning, wherein you are required to analyze paragraphs or passages, and choose the most sensible answer from among the choices. And the last would be reading comprehension, where you are required to read a selection of 200 to 350 words and are judged on how well you understand the selection and the conclusions you can formulate based on that understanding. So better touch up on your reading, spelling and grammar before tackling the GMAT!

- Quantitative Section: For many people, this is the most important part of the exam because it is probably the biggest determinant on who has the right stuff to enter into the elite program. Many applicants to international programs usually have the quantitative section as their only basis for admission. It consists of problem solving and data sufficiency parts wherein the applicant's knowledge of basic mathematical knowledge and their application in real life situations are tested to the limit.

These are two of the three major components of the GMAT that you have to prepare for in order to get yourself into the program. If you want to know more about how to pass the GMAT exam as well as the final part of the exam, visit: http://mbadegrees.com/mba-gmat-overview/ Remember that nothing beats proper rest, a good review session and a load of confidence!

If It's Opportunity You Want - Why Get an MBA? Why Not?

By Otto Kreistler

It's common knowledge that we get an education to better ourselves. We go to high school and finally to college or university to learn all the tricks we need to succeed in this world. Engineers learn the basics of their profession like structures and formulas, students of medicine learn about the human body and how to heal its many ailments, and students of the arts learn the techniques of their craft and get an insight into the human mind and soul.

But when it comes to the field of business and management, the pinnacle of all degrees you can achieve is the MBA. It is not only technical and scientific in its approach, it is also one of the most versatile of all degrees you can ever get because of the multitude of advantages that it gives the bearer. If you want to dabble into business, here are only a few reasons why the MBA is the degree for you:

* Career Advancement: One of the best reasons to get your MBA degree is that you raise your stock ten times what it was without it. One of the best reasons why people with MBAs become so sought after by large corporations to fill their top posts is because MBA students are an elite breed, selected from among the rest and taught the most advanced techniques and theories in the ever shifting and competitive field known as business. And because of this combination of skills, knowledge, leadership, it becomes easy to trust you with the biggest of responsibilities.

* Salary: When you get an MBA, most likely, you'll end up with about twice the salary you had when you didn't have the degree. Of course people will look at other things in your application like work experience, skills, and other factors but more often than not getting an MBA will get you a much bigger paycheck. Don't do it all for the money, though. The prestige and the knowledge that you gain by getting the degree should be ends in themselves.

These are only two of the many advantages that you can have by getting yourself an MBA degree. If you want to know more about the MBA degree and see if it's right for your career (which I bet it is) visit: http://mbadegrees.com/why-do-you-need-an-mba/

Explore the Galaxy With an MBA Degree - Why You Can't Do Without It

By Otto Kreistler

One of the best things you can do to give your career a jump start is to get an MBA degree. A lot of people who are into business or management claim not to need an MBA, citing examples of self-made millionaires who with their sheer talent, luck and effort alone, made empires from almost nothing. These however are a select exception and they are very appealing to the common man because they rarely, if ever, happen.

So for the rest of us, what better way to be armed with the perfect skill set to give us an advantage in such a competitive field than to be trained in an elite program that only accepts the cream of the crop? There are many advantages to having an MBA degree. In addition to gaining a mastery of such diverse fields as management, accounting, e-commerce, economics, entrepreneurship and finance (among others), you gain an incomparable potential for career advancement. You need not be in the field of business in order to enjoy all the opportunities that are available by having an MBA. Those in the field of nursing, education, law, accounting and other fields can benefit well from the training and the title that an MBA would give them.

In addition to this, MBA candidates are trained to be good leaders, hence a lot of them get into top positions in the companies they apply to or do very well in business ventures they start themselves. Having an MBA also allows you to enlarge your circle of acquaintances, which gives you more options for future projects, be they business or education related.

It is important to remember that when applying for an MBA, honesty is one of the keys that all good business schools are looking for. Filling your application with far fetched and false achievements will surely be found out once you are knee-deep into a program you are not really qualified for. So make an honest assessment of your skills and what you can bring to the table before deciding on applying.

So if you want the true key to career advancement, look no further! An MBA degree is most likely the thing for you. If you want to know more about the MBA and the good things that it can give you, visit: http://mbadegrees.com/mba-overview/

College Tuition - How to Pay

By Gina Maloney

With today's technological advances, many old traditions are becoming a thing of the part. People seem to be writing checks less often and are using check cards as a replacement. Email messages have taken the place of regular mail in many instances. Even the way you can pay your college bill is changing.

Most colleges now require their students to pay their college tuition online. In the past, the tradition at most colleges was to have an area on campus the day or so before classes began where students could go to pay college tuition. For most, no all, colleges that tradition is a thing of the past. Most colleges now offer a secure website where students can log on and pay their college tuition using a credit card or echeck.

Although the way in which students can pay their college tuition is rapidly changing, how they come up with the college tuition money is much the same. Some students have parents that pay the bill, while other choose to take out student loans. Other students choose to work though college or take a college internship to earn money to pay their bill. Working a college internship can be a very profitable option depending on which one you decide to take. A college internship can also be a great way to gain job experience.

Many old traditions are changing to meet the demand of the online world. For many students this also includes how they pay their college bill. So when you start your next semester, be sure to check the guidelines at your college.

Put Your Academic Past Behind You

By Cynthia Atoji

Juanita, 26, had a lot of worries when she applied to study at a career college. How would she juggle coursework with family and career obligations? And most importantly, was she smart enough to pull it off?

This thought "I'm not smart enough for college" can be the kiss of death for students who have a less than stellar academic record. If you're one of these students, and are thinking about enrolling in a career college you may not have the self-confidence you need to take the first step. Experts say it's time to rethink your history-why you may not have done well in school the first time around. Perhaps you were distracted by other concerns, suffered from poor self-esteem, or enjoyed parties just a little too much. Whatever caused you to lose focus, you must be resolved to change that behavior and start anew. A career college is a good place to do this.

And finding success through career training is even easier today because of programs designed exclusively for students like you. Unlike the traditional lecture and note-taking format that so many remember with dread, today's career college emphasizes hands-on instruction as well as programs geared towards vocation, not purely book-driven academics. If you didn't do well in high school, or perhaps tried to take a few college classes and found them difficult, don't think that these experiences predict your success at a career college You'll probably be much more motivated to learn at a school that is based in real-world applications rather than bookwork. One student, Mark, who struggled with high school grades and was constantly reprimanded for talking in class, found his socializing skills were an attribute at a career college-his teachers knew that as a future diagnostic medical sonographer, he'd be working closely with patients and would need people skills. Mark also found lots of support at the career college with instructors helping him through trouble spots when needed.

Since many career college students are working adults, there are other factors that make a career college more student-friendly than a traditional university. At career colleges, classes are typically offered at convenient city-based campuses, making it easier for busy working adults to complete training for a satisfying career in areas like healthcare. Students don't need to be concerned about how long it will take to complete a certificate or degree either, since many career college programs can be completed in eight to ten months.

Juanita, the student who was concerned about how she would succeed at a career college found that it was easier than she thought it would be. She found lots of support among fellow students who were pursing similar goals, and thrived in programs that provided both technical knowledge and practical skills. "Being at a career college taught me that I'm more capable than I thought I was. When I went back to school, I did better than I thought I would. I was a lot smarter than I thought."

TIPS FOR CAREER COLLEGE SUCCESS:

• Ask for help: Your career college admissions representative or student services advisor can advise you about tutoring options, GED testing or the nationally recognized ability-to-benefit test, along with requirements for admission.

• Hone your skills: If you're not sure what program is right for you, ask an admissions representative to help you figure out where your talents and aptitude lie.

• Eliminate distractions: Before school begins, take care of other responsibilities that you might have. Line up childcare, figure out transportation and parking logistics, purchase books, etc.

• Have confidence: You CAN succeed at a career college and earn a certificate toward a fulfilling and rewarding profession.
