What College Students Should Do in Their First Week

By Tom Tessin

Going to college can be both a very stressful and time consuming part of your life. Whether you're going to college for the first time in the near future or you've been going to college for a few years now, there are certain things that every college student should do during the first week. To make sure your first week of college goes very smoothly, consider some of these ideas listed below:

Signing up for classes - As a college student, you want to make sure you are choosing classes that are best for you. You don't want to take classes that are too challenging or too many classes. Make sure it is a schedule you can handle. If it is your first semester of college, you may only want to take three classes (being full time, 3*4.0 = 12.0 credits.) Taking the minimum amount of classes will help you get a feel for how much you can handle.

Going to class - You want to make sure that you go to every class for the first week of college. The professors usually give you a syllabus and go through what the course will be like. If you miss this information, you will already be behind class. If you don't like the class, and you haven't showed up until the following second week, you most likely won't get a full refund either. Make sure you get to class and you're prepared.

Go through the syllabus - You want to go through the syllabus with the teacher and when you get home. Make sure you get a good idea for what the class will be like. You want to make sure this is a class for you and you will be interested in it. Often in the syllabus, it tells you the rules, the schedule for the year and what the class will be like. Be sure you understand all of your professor's expectations.

Grade your professor - Make sure you get along with your professor. You don't want a professor that is extremely hard to get along with, doesn't teach well, and someone who is going to be hard to work with. For all the money you pay towards classes, get someone that you will like. You don't want to be miserable and dread going to class because of the professor. In college you're suppose to have fun, meet new friends and learn more than you knew when you first entered.

Get your textbooks - Professors often want to get right into things the first week or two. This is very hard to do if you don't have any books to read from or refer to. Make sure you get your college textbooks the very first week of school. The beginning of class is not the time to get behind.

Set up a schedule for yourself - Since college can be very stressful, you want to make sure that you set a schedule for yourself. If you have a job and you're working while going to school, have days for both. You don't want to overdue yourself so make a day for studying and a day for working.

Get all your school supplies - Often you need quite a few school supplies when in college. You'll most likely need things from pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, and many other little odds and ends. When going to class the first week of school, you will find out what you need.

There are many things college students should do when going to college. Be sure that you are prepared and you'll be off to a good start. The first week of college is the absolute most important part of school. Make a good impression and be prepared the first week and you'll be one step ahead. Consider these tips above and see how you're college semester goes more smoothly.
