Send These Books Off to College

By Adam Leeds

This fall, parents across the United States will be helping their sons and daughters get settled into their freshman year of college. The first year of post-high school education, the first semester in particular, is one of the most challenging times in a young person's life as he or she adjusts to being away from home, chooses an area to study and subsequently a career, and begins to accept all of the responsibilities that come with becoming an adult. Therefore it should come as no surprise that there are a number of motivational and inspirational books for college freshmen available on the market.

The Best Gift Books for Freshmen

Parents know that they cannot follow their children around to guide and support them through each difficult decision ahead. But parents can give their children the next best thing: little pick-me-ups for those doom and gloom days in the dorm. Here are five of the top motivational and inspirational books for college freshmen:

- Chicken Soup for the College Soul: Inspiring and Humorous Stories about College, by Jack L. Canfield: The famous series goes to college and provides both a pat on the back and a good belly laugh. Every student will find something to relate to here.

- Commitment to Excellence: Quotations That Lift the Spirit Toward Excellence, published by Successories: There are a number of quotation books on the market, and this is one of the best. No freshman's library is complete without a book that will provide a little motivation before that first big exam.

- The Story of My Life, by Helen Keller: This autobiography is a guaranteed way to inspire a student when he or she has hit the dreaded mid-semester wall. Keller's ability to overcome her obstacles will inspire and motivate even the most entrenched couch potato.

- All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, by Robert Fulghum: Chances are most parents already have a dog-eared copy of this one sitting around the house. This is the perfect book to send to a student by overnight mail after a particularly bad day.

- On the Road, by Jack Kerouac: One of the top one hundred novels of all-time according to a number of organizations such as Time magazine and the Modern Library, Kerouac's most famous novel ought to be required reading for all freshmen. The energetic story should come with one caveat: wait until after graduation to hit the road.

For the Parents, Too

Parents will find it comforting to know that their young adults will have these books to turn to just when they are beginning to explore their own independence. And some parents may even find that these motivational and inspirational books for college freshmen are just as valuable to them.
