Internship College - How to Build a Portfolio

By Vickie Faria

Many students already know the importance of a portfolio, but they have no idea what to include in it or how to organize it. There are many different ways to build a portfolio, depending on your field of study and your professors and college advisors are great references to consult with on what to include and how to organize it. However, these are a few general guidelines that can help get you started.

If you are currently taking an internship college or have already completed one, it can be very beneficial to hang on to any work you completed during your time at the college internship. You will probably want to include the work from your college internship that you feel displays your best job capabilities. If you are still working at your internship college, you can ask your boss's opinion on what projects would be the best to include in your portfolio. They have likely seen various portfolios during their years at the company and should have a good idea of what information potential employers like to see in a portfolio.

Most internship college portfolios are arranged with the most recent work completed at the beginning and the oldest work at the back. This allows potential employers to quickly see what your current job capabilities are and then, if they are interested, they can take a look at your older works to see how your skills have evolved and improved through your experiences. You can also organize your internship college portfolio into sections. For example, the sections could be by job or by project type, whichever you feel would be the most relevant.

An internship college is a great time to build information to include in your portfolio. A well developed portfolio gives potential employers the information they need from your college internship and any other experience to determine if you are the right fit for the job.
