Choosing Occupational Therapist Schools

There are a number of occupational therapist schools that offer advanced degrees in occupational therapy. But how do you know what the requirements for admission into their programs are and do you meet those requirements? Each school will be slightly different for their required completed courses but generally they will want to see a Bachelors of Arts or Sciences with a minimum GPA of a 3.0. Many schools will require very specific courses such as biology, anatomy, and other science courses before admission into their OT program.

There are also OT programs at schools that are certificate programs. These programs help a certified occupational therapist take courses that help them to learn about and prepare for the growing specific needs in their field. Perhaps a course regarding the needs of the elderly or pain management, for example. Even after a person becomes an occupational therapist it is still important to continue to educate yourself to meet the demands of your field.

Some of the programs have some fairly strict requirements when it comes to being admitted into their programs. They not only have completed course work requirements but also most schools require documented volunteer hours working in an occupational therapist's office. schools want to know that the applicant is serious about going for this advanced degree. If a person knows they want to go into OT before they finish their Bachelors they may want to apply for admission to one of the occupational therapist schools ahead of time and/or become familiar with the admissions requirements to make certain they are doing everything they need to be doing to prepare.

If you find yourself in a position that you realize you have not met the requirements needed for admission then you may have to complete some additional course work before or during the admission process. Many occupational therapist schools do offer online courses as well as on campus so the options are quite varied for the choice of school that you may want to attend. The earlier you know that this is going to be your chosen field the better your chances of being properly prepared for admission into one of the schools of your choice.

The degree itself can be completed in a few years depending on the number of courses that you complete per semester or over the summer. A program at an Occupational Therapist School focuses on numerous areas of patient care. Neurological, physical, cognitive function, and beyond are all studied in an OT program. the coursework is intense because Occupational Therapists work on many different skill sets for their patients.
