Definitive Guide to Central Michigan University

By J. Vincent Burr

Central Michigan University is a major public university located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. CMU was founded in 1892, and was then known as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, which was established to provide formal training for teachers. It became known as Central Michigan University in 1959, and has been growing ever since.

The campus sits on a serene 235 acre campus, and is home to about 28,000 students. The university consists of seven colleges offering over 200 degree programs in the form of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. The College of Business Administration, the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Health Professions, the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Science and Technology and the College of Graduate Studies make up Central Michigan University.

The Central Michigan University College of Graduate Studies offers 50 doctoral programs and over 50 master's level programs, notably in Business Administration, Communications, Education, Health, Social Sciences, and Science & Technology. The Department of Mathematics, the Department of History, and the Department of Psychology are the departments currently offering PhD programs.

Central Michigan is involved in some ground breaking work in the fields of Alzheimer's disease research, Parent/Child Interaction Therapy, forensic interviewing and advanced materials research with their Advanced Materials Research Initiative in the College of Science and Technology. CMU is also well known for its program in logistics, supplying many workers to the local auto industry in the fields of supply chain management.

A couple of unique things to note about CMU are the fact that its students are in the process of forming a union to fight for student's rights to a living wage, and the unusual CMU Promise program which locked tuition rates for all incoming freshmen for 5 years. Although groundbreaking, the program was abandoned by the administration. Rates had jumped almost 20% before the "CMU Promise" kicked in, so most students were unhappy with it, anyway. The administration did honor the locked rates though, but as of the Fall 2008 semester, the program no longer exists.

The athletic teams at Central Michigan University are known as The Chippewa's. Although they were placed on the NCAA list of schools with "hostile or abusive nicknames" they appealed with the help and support of the local Chippewa tribe, and the decision was reversed. Their teams are Division I-A, and they play in the Mid-American Conference. Although not an athletic powerhouse, they have a very well respected wrestling program.

Some notable alumni include actor Jeff Daniels, Dick Enberg - sports broadcaster for CBS, Robert P. Griffin - a member of both houses of congress during his lifetime, "Thunder" Dan Majerle - former NBA star and Peter Schoomaker the 35th Chief of Staff of the United States Army, as well as several influential members of the business community.

Central Michigan University has a lot to offer the prospective student, and anyone looking to attend college in the area would do themselves a disservice not to look at what CMU has to offer. For more information on the school, including reviews by actual CMU students, check out the links below.
