I'm going to tell you 3 incredibly simple things that will improve your life if you implement it.

But here is the catch: you have to do it before the end of this year.

Why?

Because if you don't implement these habits now, chances are you never will do it. Plus, the sooner you implement these habits, the quicker you'll make money.

So while further ado here are 3 things every college students should do before the end of this year.

1. Get into the habit of exercising.

You see, I used to work out whenever I "feel like it" which amounts to never working out at all. That's why I was this skinny, tall guy. But since I implemented the habit of exercising 1 hour a day, 5 times a week ... I look like the the Spartans from 300. No kidding! Not everyone can afford a gym membership but there are no excuses. Just go outside and start working out using a body weights, and do body exercises like pullups, situps, push ups and the like.

2. Start saving money now.

At one point I saved over $10,000 a year, and I was making a very modest income. Just put $50 or $100 every time you get a check in the mail. Put the mony into your savings account. Use your saving money for something inexpensive. For example, I used my savings on laser eye surgery which cost around $4000. (Best thing ever)

3. Learn how to make money without a job

I still find it amusing that people think that they need a job (just. over. broke) to make money. Society have us brainwashed into thinking that we must get a job in order to make a living, right? But the fact is, you don't need to make a full time living on your own. Perhaps you want to make a part-time income on the Internet. Learn about affiliate marketing, and very soon you'll be earning $100 while you sleep overnight. (Happens to me all the time)

Strategic Thinking Requires Critical Thinking and Critical Reading Skills

I just reviewed an excellent paper by MAJ David S. Johnston, Ph.D. entitled "Reading, Writing and Strategic Thinking: Service Schools Fail to Develop Critical Reading Skills of Rising Leaders".

Just as there are many forms of writing that our officers will perform in their career, so too are there forms & methods of reading. MAJ Johnston makes the case for critical reading skills in this excellent paper, and asserts we are missing a critical component in college curriculum.

We have collectively been looking formally at our writing program at our college, but my sense is that this has been driven more from a writing improvement approach than from a holistic review of writing as a requirement for effective communication. In the same way we probably consider reading from a "fix the first, worst problem" too. This may be a part of our nature and culture.

Off the top of my head I can think of the following styles/purposes/modes of writing that require a specific set of techniques to be effective. I think 1-size-fits-all doesn't work for writing or for reading.

Consider at a minimum the following demonstrably different, but each useful, writing styles:

1. formal academic

2. an expert practitioner's accessible, professional synthesis

3. op-ed pieces

4. culturally sensitive strat comm messages

5. opords & oplans, policies, regulations

6. book reviews for popular & professional magazines

7. argumentative essays & information papers

8. copywriting for sales

9. executive summary paragraphs

10. speeches

11. blogging & web commentary (This IS an art form with its own pace, rhythm and technique)

Consider the following different reading styles and the different purposes they serve (and the techniques & skills that apply)

1. websearching & blogscanning

2. speedreading

3. scanning, reviewing, reading

4. purposeful searching reading (scanning for answers to specific questions)

5. critical, analytical reading

It seems to me that we should be looking at our reading and writing programs holistically and ensure we are addressing all required skills over the course of the year that we are privileged to share a classroom with our students.

Planning For College Tuition - Things Less Thought Of

Some people don't think beyond college tuition when planning for college. Stop right there, it's about to get more costly. But there are things you can do to save on these additional expenses.

College room and board must play a major role in planning for your college tuition. Your college room and board will be determined largely by which college he or she decides on. Many colleges require freshmen to stay on campus if their families don't live locally. Many of the colleges also have a mandatory meal plan for freshmen as well.

College Dormitories usually come with a meal plan, sometimes this plan is optional and nearly all dormitories have on site security.

There are also possibly Campus Apartments at the college. These apartments normally come with a small kitchen.

You could consider off-site housing or apartments. The college normally organizes these and what you are renting is a bedroom, bathroom and normally living room and kitchen common space between your child and 2-3 other people the apartment complex rents to. This could turn out to be more cost effective than staying on campus. Most apartments rent on a 12-month lease. If your child plans on coming home for the summer, you may want to consider asking for a 9-month lease or subletting in the summer.

Now that we have living quarters arranged, it's time to look for a computer.

Before you go to the expense of getting your child a new computer, first check with the schools computer center and find out which operating system the school uses. To make things easier, you'll want to make sure you pick the same operating system.

Sometimes a University will have an on-campus computer store where students are offered a discount of about 10% on new computers. Shop wisely. Check local computer stores and the Internet to make sure you are getting the best deal for your money.

You may also wish to consider a laptop as the student can take this to class or lectures. Plus, laptops have come down in price substantially.

And while laptop prices have gone down, textbook prices have gone through the roof. Most campus bookstores sell used books at a lesser price. Check through the book before you purchase it and make sure there are no obvious rips, tears, or missing pages. Also make sure it has not been so heavily highlighted and doodled on that it can be read.

Your student can save even more money by selling his or her books back to the college campus bookstore. Also, before deciding where to purchase your books, there are online sources that sell discounted student books.

How innovative are you? You can actually get paid for your child to live off campus if you so desire. Not only will you save on his or her boarding costs but make a profit too. If you are financially fit, consider purchasing a house near campus. You can then hire your child as the building manager in exchange for free rent. And don't forget to rent out the extra bedrooms.

Planning for college tuition is always frustrating because, as parents, there are things we simply forget to think about. Our goal is normally to make sure our child gets the best college degree and experience possible. Not to mention, it was a whole lot different when we went to school. Planning For College For the Best Experience

Planning for college ultimately should begin around your child's first year of life. Many times, in fact, more so than not, this just does not seem to happen. The financial burden of your child receiving the best college degree and life experience can be devastating if you don't plan.

One thing many people do not think of is that you can get financial aid for your college student and it does not matter how much money you, as a parent earn.

There are really two ways to insure that you don't have to pay the going rate to send your child to college.

The first is tax savings. The Internal Revenue Code has many tax incentives for higher education. The second way is financial aid. Financial aid is where colleges arrange for loans, jobs, and grants to help students, and their parents with the bills. In fact, the number one mistake parents make when they are in the college application stage of planning for college is that they don't fill out the financial aid form, as they do not think they will qualify. This could not be farther from the truth. Most colleges offer what is called "Merit Based Aid" which pays for tuition and gives discounts.

Always apply for financial aid when filling out the college application -- and here is why this is important. Even though Merit Based Aid has nothing to do with finances, most colleges do not offer Merit Based Aid to students who have not applied for financial aid.

There are some colleges who simply do not offer Merit Based Aid. These are the more elite colleges. Families who apply for financial aid in these colleges are assigned what is called "Expected Family Contributions" based on income and assets. As a parent, your assets are protected. For the student the assets are expected to be used for college costs.

So the big hint here is, and this is why planning for college should be done as early as possible, keep assets in your name, not in your child's name. You may also want to go a bit wild and overboard on investments that are not counted such as life insurance, annuities, and tax-deferred retirement plans. It is also good to know that home equity is not counted.

Plan early and plan wisely and the cost of a college degree can be your child's for much less than you think.
