Making the Most of Campus Life

By Phillip Walters

Hands up... those of you who are only focusing on what goes on inside the classroom when considering your choice of college? Not many, I guess! Many students would say that they gain more from the range of extracurricular activities and opportunities offered by their college than they do from the academic lectures and practicals. College is a great place to meet up with other like-minded individuals and explore all sorts of new activities. What follows is just a taste of what's out there - go find out for yourself!

Sports: Getting fit is always fun if you're part of a college team, and even if you've never tried a particular sport, this is the perfect opportunity! Colleges often fund sports teams, and you may discover talents you never knew you had!

Theatre and Music Groups: For wannabe actors, dancers and musicians, there is always an opportunity to perform at college - check out the bulletin board for info on

collegiate theatre and dance productions, vocal and instrumental ensembles, and even groups like marching and pep bands.

Campus Media: Campus newspapers and radio and television stations are usually on the lookout for students from all disciplines, not just journalism and communication majors.

Sororities: Fraternities and sororities are great for making friends and having fun, but can also provide you with an opportunity to lend a hand within the community, something which future employers will always consider favorably.

Academic and Career Clubs: An easy way to find out more about your specialist area of study and to socialize at the same time! You may even get to find out about career opportunities such as internships by joining one of these clubs.

Philanthropic and Service Organizations: If there's a burning issue which you want to take action on, or a charity you want to support, these organizations will help you club together with others who understand your concerns and who can help you make the world a better place!

Cultural Clubs: Why not find out more about your own roots, keep in touch with your family's culture, or discover something about a culture you've never really known much about?

Religious Groups: A chance to get together with others who share your own faith, or to discover more about a religion that you have always been interested in.

Other Special Interest Groups: Catering for just about every interest you can think of, whether it be paintballing or powerboats, there are always loads of special interest groups to sign up with - you're guaranteed to fin d the right one for you!

Extra-curricular activities of any kind are an integral part of your college experience. Be sure to see what potential schools offer during your college search. Don't be shy - get out of your dorm, and take your part in this exciting new world!

I want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to go to college. This means getting in, finding the right college fit and paying for school. I love to share what I've learned and I hope you can find some useful information useful in your college search.
